The Emotion Effect: Taking Loyalty Beyond Rewards – PYMNTS.com


What makes a consumer loyal? There really is no magic formula, and brands are spending serious money on strategies before truly answering this question. Rewards programs are one big category attracting a lot of attention and dollars, yet they don’t always deliver a payoff.

Rewards and loyalty often get merged, but they’re not the same thing, said Stephen Goodrich, CEO of ZipLine. What makes a consumer loyal may not be the things brands expect. Even consumers themselves may be surprised by what it truly takes to win – and then keep – their hearts.

Going back to the basics helps answer this question. Customers must first know, then grow to like, and ultimately trust a brand before joining its loyalty program. An individual who participates in this type of program trusts the brand and therefore expects the program to make sense to them individually. They should be able to easily answer the question, “Why do I like this brand?” The rewards further help solidify their loyalty.

Rewards, though less traditionally, said Goodrich, can also serve as a way of introducing the brand to the consumer and getting them to pay attention to this brand instead of that one. For these reasons, it becomes even more important for brands to get it right with their loyalty programs.

So, what does it take to get customers saying, “I’m a Dunkin’ Donuts guy” or “I’m a JetBlue girl?” Goodrich said it comes down to experience. Truly loyal customers, he said, have an emotional connection to the brand, which is driven by experiences the retailer has delivered.

In a recent interview with Karen Webster, Goodrich dissected the elements of loyalty and how retail brands can achieve it.

The Toolkit

Goodrich said the number one tool for breeding loyalty is a strong brand identity. The examples of Dunkin’ Donuts and JetBlue are just two of many that show how strong branding and a positive customer experience can drive high repeat business. This is in addition to delivering on what they stand for, as well as meeting – and hopefully exceeding – the consumer’s expectations.

Close behind branding, said Goodrich, is analytics. Data is powerful, enabling brands to target consumers based on their needs and to deliver relevant rewards. He noted that rewards “aren’t delightful if they don’t matter.” Is the brand catering to the individual’s needs and wants through rewards that make sense? Are they making it as easy and painless as possible to buy from them and cash out their rewards?

Rewards that matter, Webster chimed in, don’t have to come in the form of cash back. The reward may be getting something extra that day or receiving a notification that an item on the customer’s wish list has become available. The latter, of course, requires a payments element to facilitate – which hearkens to the third most critical tool for loyalty.

Finally, a system is needed that folds rewards into the payment process so they don’t become separate events at the point of sale, which Goodrich said creates friction and becomes a chokepoint. This process should be as seamless as possible through payment-powered loyalty. Goodrich noted that it all relates back to delivering a positive consumer experience.

Combining payment and rewards furthers the emotional connection between consumer and merchant, building even more affinity for the brand. Merchant-centric payment and loyalty is a strategy that some brands are adopting to deliver targeted rewards catered to the individual, and Goodrich said he expects to see more of this over the next year.

Creating Cumberland Farms Guys

In the past, choosing a gas station may have involved searching for the lowest price, a most-convenient location, clean facilities or perhaps the one that sources petrol in the cleanest fashion, if the customer is environmentally conscious. This is not a decision that has traditionally been based on brand.

Yet that is exactly what Cumberland Farms introduced with its rewards program, said Goodrich – one that truly translated into brand loyalty in the unlikeliest of categories: gas stations and convenience stores. The result is that customers go out of their way, literally and figuratively, to choose Cumberland Farms.

The chain’s SmartPay option has become the number-one payment method at Cumberland Farms locations, surpassing even Visa. Some stores enjoy penetration as high as 50 percent, Goodrich said.

What Cumberland Farms did right was to create an experience akin to paying for a coffee at Starbucks – simply scan the mobile app to pay, with payments happening automatically and invisibly in the background. Keeping the customer experience as their number-one priority has sparked the success of the program.

Amazon Go makes a similar value proposition, Goodrich added. Customers walk in, do their shopping and walk out without ever visiting a register. This, he said, is the direction payments are headed, and Cumberland Farms’ success with SmartPay is just another example.

Emotional Connection Is Key

A consumer values a discount at the pump, said Goodrich, but that alone is not why SmartPay has taken off. It is successful because of the strong emotional connection to the brand, prompted in part by the payment program. It’s the whole experience: recognizing the consumer at the pump, ease of use, coupled with a reward that makes sense to the consumer. “They know me…”

Rewards can introduce and help retain consumers to a brand, but it is the total consumer experience that creates the brand equity and, consequently, fierce loyalty.

Proving the point, Goodrich noted, are other retailers offering a smaller reward than Cumberland, but enjoying the same or greater adoption. That, he said, illustrates how important the experience can be when it comes to loyalty.

The bottom line is that loyalty is rarely about the product or a discount. Most consumers can’t tell the difference between Shell and Sunoco — gas is gas, after all — but it is about the way the brand makes them feel. It’s about the experience, the emotion it evokes through delivering meaningful rewards and offering the most convenient system possible.

Many brands miss a significant opportunity, Goodrich said, by failing to understand the importance of building an emotional connection with their customers.

Red alert brings 'do not travel' warning – BBC News

A red alert for snow is in force for many of Scotland’s most highly-populated areas, with warnings of widespread disruption and risk to life.

It covers Strathclyde, Lothian, Tayside, Fife and Central, as well as parts of south east Scotland and the Borders until 10:00 on Thursday.

Trains, flights and many bus services in the affected areas have stopped.

Driving conditions are treacherous, and people have been told not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Employers had been encouraged to send staff home early ahead of the red warning coming into effect at 15:00 on Wednesday.

It is the first time a red alert for snow has ever been issued in Scotland, and only the second time anywhere in the UK.

A red warning means extreme weather is expected, with people urged to take immediate action to keep themselves and others safe from the impact of the weather.

Widespread damage, travel and power disruption and risk to life is likely, and people must avoid dangerous areas and follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities.

The warning came after the so-called Beast from the East caused widespread disruption across most of Scotland on Wednesday, with more than 1,600 schools shut and transport badly affected.

About 11cm (4in) of snow had fallen in the centre of Glasgow by lunchtime on Tuesday, with First Bus saying its services in the city and surrounding areas would stop by 16:00.

Glasgow Airport will be closed to all flights for the rest of the day, with other airports, including Edinburgh and Aberdeen, also seeing disruption.

No trains are running on the West Coast Main Line between Scotland and England, and the Forth Road Bridge has been closed to all traffic, with vehicles being diverted to the Queensferry Crossing.

Driving conditions are treacherous, although a reduction in the number of people travelling meant there were no major problems on the roads during morning rush hour.

The Met Office said: “Heavy snow showers and drifting of lying snow in the strong easterly winds will become more widespread across the area later on Wednesday afternoon, through the evening and overnight into Thursday.

“Roads will become blocked by deep snow, with many stranded vehicles and passengers. Long delays and cancellations on bus, rail and air travel are expected.”

It also said some rural communities could become cut off for several day, and warned of the potential for long interruptions to power supplies and other services.

Transport Minister Humza Yousaf said people would be risking their lives if they ignored the travel advice, and warned that the weather is due to worsen.

He told BBC Scotland’s John Beattie: “It couldn’t be clearer, couldn’t be simpler – don’t travel, avoid travel, because if you do you will not only be disrupted but, as I said, potentially putting yourself and others into danger.

“I’ve just been on the phone to the MD of ScotRail and they will be winding down their services and suspending them and cancelling them in the red area from 15:00 until 10:00 tomorrow.

“That’s important to do not just for the welfare of customers, passengers, but clearly for the welfare of ScotRail staff who have to try to get home early.”

All 11 SPFL football matches scheduled for Wednesday evening have been cancelled.

More than 450,000 pupils were off school on Wednesday, with the vast majority to remain closed on Thursday. Parents should check their local council’s website and social media pages for updates.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has said it is cancelling all routine elective procedures and outpatient appointments on Thursday because of the weather conditions, although emergency and essential elective procedures will still go ahead.

Some universities are also closed, including Glasgow, Strathclyde and Stirling.

About 27,000 homes in Aberdeenshire were left without power for less than an hour on Wednesday morning, but Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said this had not been due to the weather.

Virgin Trains said the route between Carlisle and Scotland is closed with no trains or replacement buses running, because of the weather.

Alternative rail routes between England and Scotland are also “severely disrupted”.

What other red warnings have there been?

The current Met Office warning system came into force in 2011, after heavy snow in December of the previous year left motorists stranded overnight on the M8 between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

This is the ninth red weather warning of any type for anywhere in the UK since then, and only the second ever red snow warning in the UK – and the first issued for snow in Scotland.

  • On 26 December 2015 a red alert for heavy rain was issued across Lancashire and Yorkshire.
  • 5 December 2015 for heavy rain across parts of Cumbria and the Scottish Borders (Storm Desmond)
  • 12 February 2014 for severe gales across Wales and northern England
  • 18 January 2013 for snow in south Wales
  • 7 July 2012 for rain in south west Devon and east Cornwall
  • 3 January 2012 for storm force winds in the Central Belt of Scotland
  • 8 December 2011 for severe gales in central and southern Scotland

Police Scotland also repeated its advice for people not to travel.

Ch Supt Stewart Carles, head of the force’s road policing unit, said: “The warning covers the commuter periods both this evening and tomorrow morning, and so we would ask people to think very carefully about making alternative arrangements for these times and to consider whether they really need to make that journey, particularly on the road network which may become overwhelmed as people leave work early to beat the storm.

“We’d urge employers to be as flexible as possible in terms of their staff perhaps not being able being able to come to their normal places of work and to consider alternatives.”

Schenectady man rang up $3000 fraudulent credit card bill, police say – Albany Times Union



A Schenectady man already facing heroin distribution charges was arrested for multiple felonies on Monday, troopers said.

State Police said K-Shawn Bankhead, 40, used a fraudulent credit card in 2015 to make purchases at local jewelry stores and other retailers. He allegedly rang up a bill of close to $3,000 before the credit card’s owner discovered the charges.

Bankhead was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument and grand larceny. He was arraigned in Colonie town court. He is currently jailed in Schenectady county jail.

All Fortnite Season 3 Battle Pass Skins And Rewards – GameSpot


Fortnite’s next big update has launched on all platforms, bringing new content and improvements to Battle Royale and Save the World. Players of the former mode will find that Season 3 has begun, introducing a new Battle Pass on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Along with that, there are a ton of new items to acquire.

As with previous Battle Passes, this one includes a limited selection of content that anyone can unlock. The vast majority of rewards, however, are limited to players who purchase the full Battle Pass, which costs 950 V-Bucks (or just around $10). If you owned the Season 2 Battle Pass, you’ll automatically get five tiers’ worth of progress for free. Additional tiers can be earned by collecting stars by playing and fulfilling specific objectives, or by purchasing them with additional V-Bucks.

Among the items you’ll find in the premium tier of the Battle Pass are new pickaxes, skins, gliders, emotes, and much more. There’s also Back Bling, which is a new category of item added as part of the 3.0.0 update alongside skydiving trails and loading screens. In the images above, you can see all of the major new items included in the Season 3 Battle Pass. Bear in mind, these are all cosmetic; nothing will actually impact gameplay directly. If you’re a fan of references, though, you’re in luck, as you’ll find skins clearly meant to resemble the likes of John Wick and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord.

In terms of playable content, Fortnite has received some new additions. Battle Royale now has a new weapon, the Hand Cannon, that uses Heavy ammo. Some notable improvements have also been made to building (which also extends to Save the World), and a 60 FPS framerate is now the default option for all console players. You can see everything the update does in the Fortnite 3.0.0 patch notes.

After hopping around the world for nearly 20 years as a travel journalist, I’d like to think that I’ve picked up some insider information about the ‘business’ of travel that’s worth sharing. While I don’t profess to be a maverick adventure traveller or an ‘off-the-grid’ kind of girl – although I’ve tried my hand at both – I am on the road at least once a month and I’ve learnt a few tricks along the way. Here’s a few tips for those, who, like me, are just as passionate about travelling the world.

1. If someone asks you to say hi to a friend when you are travelling&nbsp;–&nbsp;do it

Years ago, I was heading out on a mega-assignment to Brazil. Sao Paolo, first, and then on to Rio. It had been a life-long dream to go to Latin America, and, even better, I had a personal connection with my story –&nbsp;which was investigating the history of Sao Paolo’s expansive&nbsp;Italian community. The Brazilian-Italian culture had captured the popular imagination&nbsp;in an historical telenovela,&nbsp;which was on TV across the country at the time,&nbsp;and which had been filmed in Rio. As a daughter of an Italian immigrant myself (albeit in London) –&nbsp;I was thrilled that my editor agreed it was a story worth covering.

At the time I was on staff on a well-known travel magazine, and as I was about to leave the office, a colleague stopped me and asked me to do him a favour. He wanted me to take a card and a&nbsp;present to an old friend in Rio. “You’ll love her,” he said. My heart sank.

A local tour of Tokyo means you’ll take in all the sights

When I&nbsp;eventually got to Rio, I decided to call her&nbsp;immediately&nbsp;and get the ‘ordeal’, as I saw it, over with.&nbsp;The phone conversation, it turned out, ended up being the best thing that happened to me&nbsp;in this&nbsp;thrilling –&nbsp;but intimidating – city. After not being able to&nbsp;think of a suitable excuse&nbsp;why I couldn’t join her for dinner, I&nbsp;ended up meeting Patrizia just a few hours later. And here&nbsp;the story changes. Not only was the lady in question&nbsp;married to an equally lovely and well-known restaurateur (the gorgeous eatery we went to actually belonged to them and I was treated with dish after delicious dish), but, best of all, they were&nbsp;wonderful company and overwhelmingly generous in their hospitality, especially considering I was a stranger. My friend was right: I had an immediate connection with them.

What Lewis Black Can't Travel Without – New York Times

The comedian Lewis Black, known for his abrasive, expletive-laden style of stand-up, appears regularly on late night talk shows and has released 12 comedy albums. His latest, “Lewis Black — Black to the Future,” was released last fall.

Mr. Black travels the country doing as many as 200 shows a year, so he has become obsessed with finding direct flights — “All I care about are direct flights. My life is devoted to direct flights” — and even arranges his travel so that he’s leaving his New York apartment to get to Newark airport at low-traffic times. “Between 11 and 12 in the afternoon, that’s the window. Plus, usually, traffic in the airport, too, has gone down at that point.”

When on the road, he also spends considerable time on the tour bus. “If I have two weeks back-to-back out west, or you know, in the middle of the country, then it makes sense that I don’t get off the bus. So I’ll spend two or three days on the bus traveling to the next set of shows.” He’s written most of his three books on buses in between shows and recommends it for anyone trying to write. “Yeah, but on a tour bus. A Greyhound, it’s not going to happen. You’re going to kill yourself after 12 hours.”

“I’m not doing this to get high, I’m doing this to go to sleep. But boy, some of those edibles I have done to try to go to sleep and I’m like, oh no I’m going to sit here and review everything. They also have a bunch of really funny pieces, you know, unusual stuff that’s occurred throughout the United States — congressmen or local representatives who say things that are so beyond appalling that you wonder how these people are in office. Or is there not a psychological unit in the area? And then I use some of that on stage to kind of give a sense to my audience that there is a level of lunacy that continues to go on in this country, and part of it is that we listen to people, who really, we shouldn’t be listening to because something’s wrong with them. And they need to see — we have a big mental health problem and a lot of it is represented by a lot of people in government. I keep saying, the largest outpatient clinic in the world is Congress.”

So, let’s make it easy. Here are the do’s and dont’s of credit card spending.

Here are the three things financial expert Clark Howard says you should never put on a credit card bill.

First is hospital bills, which those can be pricey and don’t make is worst with interest. First try to negotiate a payment plan. Unpaid medical bills also don’t you credit score the way credit debt does.

Next thing to never put on a credit card is student expenses. You will pay a lot more that way and we all know school is expensive enough.

Lastly, never put your dream wedding on a credit card. It’s love not luxury.

Stay within your means and enjoy the part without the stress of the debt you marriage is starting with.

So what do you charge?

One thing to charge is Internet purchases. Credit cards have protections if the purchase turns out to be a scam or another problem.

The gas pump is another place to charge your credit card. Gas pumps hold the amount for several days, thus could cause a debit account to overdraft.

Lastly, restaurants is another place to charge your credit card. Restaurants have a high turnover of employees, so you want protection in case your card gets in the wrong hands.

If you’re a fan of references, though, you’re in luck, as you’ll find skins clearly meant to resemble the likes of John Wick and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Star-Lord.

In terms of playable content, Fortnite has received some new additions. Battle Royale now has a new weapon, the Hand Cannon, that uses Heavy ammo. Some notable improvements have also been made to building (which also extends to Save the World), and a 60 FPS framerate is now the default option for all console players. My View: As the years wear on, life's rewards are plain – Buffalo News

I have been working for the majority of my life starting as a teenager; my interest always leaned towards the social sciences and the health fields. For the most recent (35) years I have chosen the field of ophthalmology specifically as my calling. I have worn many hats throughout my working years, starting as a student, wife, mother, store owner and always leaning towards the health care professional. I recently have cut my work schedule to three 10-hour days, the least amount of hours I have ever worked in the workforce. Now that I am in my 60s I have begun to notice it has become a little more difficult to rise in the dark to get to work; the body a little less agile as it once was. I have more time to now reflect on the past and what I would like to do with my four-day weekends that presently make me feel like I am on vacation every week. It’s not so easy to get to work at 6:30 am as it used to be although I am not your “sleep in” type of person. I have always thought I would be missing the best part of the day if I slept later than 6am.

As I have been working in a “city” practice for the last several years I have experienced many people and their diverse stories that I would have never been in contact with. They have shared their stories with me – both good and bad and have broadened my mind in many ways. Over the last 35 years I have met more people and shared more experiences with them than most people will experience in a lifetime. I have enjoyed working in the medical field immensely but the friendships and acquaintances have meant just as much to be. Their stories and lives shared with me have broadened my mind and have made me a better person. I have learned not to be judgmental of others as it is so easy to “judge a book by their cover.” They have let me into their lives, if only for a moment, that has given me knowledge to grow with. We all encounter people every day whether we are shopping, working or talking on phone calls. Behind every one of those people, lies a story that makes them who they are today. I have been lucky enough to share with them, because of the line of work I am in, their amazing stories and lives. Many of these remarkable people and their stories will stay with me forever; I have shared some of their stories with my husband as dinner conversation for many years which have made us realize just how lucky we have been all our lives.

I will still be making the effort to get myself to work for at least a while longer as it has been not only the best career choice I could have picked but the people and patients themselves that bring me back every day. What started out as just a “job” in my 20’s has turned into a life long career that I will carry forever. How lucky am I that I get the chance to walk in their shoes, if for only a moment which has made me realize how good life has been to me; the patients and work staff I have encountered over the years have not only enriched my life but have helped enhance my personal knowledge and growth.
